Easter with a Newborn: Sweet Traditions to Start (Even if You’re Sleep-Deprived)

Ah, Easter. That pastel-hued, chocolate-filled, bunny-hopping holiday that sneaks up on us every autumn. Before baby, it might’ve meant long weekend getaways, hot cross bun brunches, and cracking into your weight in mini eggs by 10am. But now? You’ve got a new little chick in the nest — and while sleep might be scarce, there’s still plenty of Easter magic to go around.

Whether you’re running on one hour of sleep or living off reheated coffee, here are a few sweet (and low-effort) Easter traditions to start with your newborn that’ll make the memories feel just as special — minus the meltdown.

🐣 1.

Baby’s First Easter Photo (Bunny Ears = Non-Negotiable)

Nothing says “first Easter” quite like popping a pair of bunny ears on your baby’s noggin and snapping away. No need to hire a photographer or create a Pinterest-perfect setup — just grab a soft blanket, a cute onesie, maybe a swaddle in a pretty pastel, and your phone. Boom. Memory made.

Hot Tip: Our Swaddles in dreamy colours like “Harvest Bunny” or “Wildflower” make the perfect Easter-themed backdrop — soft, cosy, and totally camera-ready. Peep them here 🐰

🧺 2.

Easter Basket (Minus the Chocolate)

Your bub might not be gnawing on choccie eggs just yet, but you can still create a sweet little Easter basket full of practical goodies (that you picked, of course). Think:

  • A cute new bib

  • A soft toy or rattle

  • A teether

  • A new book

  • A swaddle or comforter

It’s also a great way to stock up on baby essentials while pretending it’s for the “tradition.” We won’t tell.

📚 3.

Start a “First Easter” Keepsake

This could be as simple as a journal entry, a page in your baby book, or printing one of those cute photos and writing a little note on the back. One day, your tiny human will love looking back and seeing how loved they were — even when they were basically a potato in a bunny suit.

If you haven’t got a baby memory book yet (or have one, but forgot to fill it out — zero judgement), our Baby’s First Year books are the cutest and easiest way to keep track of these special milestones.

🍞 4.

Hot Cross Bun Breakfast in Bed (Sort Of)

Let’s be real — breakfast in bed probably looks more like crumbs in the bassinet and cold coffee on the change table. But carve out a moment (even five minutes) to enjoy a fresh hot cross bun, maybe with bub snuggled on your lap, and just take it all in. This season of life is wild and messy — and that’s kind of the beauty of it.

💞 5.

Create a “Same Time Next Year” Tradition

Take a photo of your family each Easter in the same spot or with the same prop — whether it’s a bunny toy, an Easter onesie, or just your fave armchair at Grandma’s house. Each year, you’ll watch your baby grow (and maybe your under-eye bags shrink?) and it’ll become a special little visual timeline of your Easter memories.

Remember, Traditions Don’t Have to Be Perfect

If all you manage this Easter is cuddles on the couch while wearing matching pyjamas — that counts. If you forget the Easter basket or the bunny ears didn’t fit — that counts too. Traditions don’t need to be fancy, they just need to feel like you.

So pour that reheated coffee, pop your bub in something snuggly, and hop into this new chapter with love, laughter, and maybe a side of hot cross bun crumbs.
