Due in Winter? Here’s How to Survive Pregnancy When It’s Freezing

If you’re growing a tiny human while the rest of the world is growing icicles—solidarity, mama. Winter pregnancy is a whole different kind of chill (literally), and between waddling around in puffer jackets and trying not to slip on wet footpaths, it can feel like nature’s playing a cruel little joke. But fear not! We’ve gathered all the warm, cosy, practical and actually helpful tips to help you survive the frosty season while rocking that beautiful bump.

1. Layer Like a Pro

Your body’s already running a bit of a furnace thanks to the extra blood volume and the 24/7 job of creating life. So instead of a bulky jumper that traps heat like a woolly oven, opt for breathable layers. Think merino singlets, long sleeve tees, cosy cardis—bonus points if they’re nursing-friendly for later!

Top tip: Skip the giant maternity coat that costs more than your stroller and opt for a bump-friendly zip extender or oversized hoodie you can steal from your partner.

2. Slippers Are Now Essential Equipment

If you’re spending more time at home, treat your feet like the queens they are. Cold floors and swollen ankles are not a cute combo. Invest in a solid pair of slippers that feel like clouds, preferably ones you can actually bend down to put on without holding your breath.

3. Get Your Slow Cooker in the Game

Winter pregnancy cravings hit different. Soup, stew, and ALL the carbs? Yes please. A slow cooker is a pregnant woman’s BFF—throw everything in, nap for a few hours, and return to the scent of victory (and maybe lamb shanks). Plus, it’ll save you standing over a hot stove while your feet swell and your patience dwindles.

4. Keep Moving (Even If It’s Just from the Couch to the Kettle)

We get it—who wants to go for a walk when the wind feels like knives? But gentle movement can work wonders for those achey hips, digestion, and even your mood. If the weather’s miserable, cue up a prenatal yoga video on YouTube or do a few laps of your hallway like a sleep-deprived zombie. It all counts.

5. Moisturise Like Your Life Depends On It

Dry air + hormonal skin = flaky, itchy, what-is-even-happening vibes. Slather on that belly butter, mama—bonus if it helps with stretch marks, too. And don’t forget lips and hands. Keep a stash of balm and hand cream in every room like a true winter pregnancy survivalist.

6. Bump-Friendly Hot Drinks Are the Vibe

Your coffee limit might’ve taken a hit, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge. Warm up with pregnancy-safe options like rooibos tea, hot lemon and honey, or fancy decaf lattes. Add a fluffy blanket, some Netflix, and boom—instant bliss.

7. Sleep, But Make It Cosy

Pregnancy sleep is a cruel mistress. Add freezing toes and midnight toilet trips, and it’s just… rude. Try a pregnancy pillow, flannelette sheets, and a hot water bottle (just keep it away from the bump). Bonus points if you can train your partner to deliver snacks during 2am wake-ups.

8. Prep for Baby Like a Bear Preps for Hibernation

There’s something magical about getting baby’s things ready in winter. Maybe it’s the nesting instincts, or maybe it’s the fact you’re stuck inside anyway. Use the colder months to wash those cute tiny clothes, sort out your hospital bag, and binge-read every birth story you can get your hands on.

9. Vitamin D, Please and Thank You

Winter sun? Practically a rumour. Ask your midwife or doctor if you should be supplementing with vitamin D—it helps with mood, immunity, and bone health (yours and baby’s). It’s a small thing that can make a big difference.

10. Give Yourself Permission to Hibernate

Seriously. Growing a human is enough. If you’re tired, rest. If you don’t want to go to that thing, skip it. If your idea of self-care is lying under a blanket watching trashy TV—lean in, mama. Winter is the perfect excuse to slow down and snuggle up.

Winter pregnancy might be cold, uncomfortable, and a little grumpy at times—but it’s also a beautiful season to prepare for the biggest adventure of your life. So rug up, be kind to yourself, and know that spring (and baby cuddles!) are just around the corner.
